The William L. Slayton House, 3411 Ordway Street, NW, Washington, DC (1960), is one of only three houses known to have been designed by world renowned architect Ieoh Ming Pei. The others are his own in Katonah, NY (1954) and the Tandy House in Ft Worth, TX (1969). Pei, primarily a corporate architect, but best known for municipal buildings and art museums, consented in 1959 to design a house for his friend and colleague. Slayton, who served as Commissioner of the Urban Renewal Administration’s Housing and Home Finance Agency during the Kennedy administration and who enjoyed architecture as an avocation, worked in close collaboration with the Pei firm in the design of his house. The current owners, in 2002, conducted a major renovation of the house under the supervision of architect Hugh Newell Jacobsen, winner of numerous national awards for residential design.
